Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Rheumatology Fellowship Program at the University of Minnesota Medical School!
The Rheumatology Fellowship program at the University of Minnesota emphasizes training in academic medicine and research. The first two years are divided between clinical and research activities. An optional third year is primarily for research. The program is based at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview and the Minneapolis Veterans Administration Medical Center. Clinical duties will be divided between these institutions, while research will be done with one faculty member at one hospital. There are five full-time faculty members at the University of Minnesota Medical Center and three at the VA Medical Center. In addition, several private rheumatologists in the Twin Cities area take an active role in the program.
Faculty basic research interests include: viral induced autoimmunity, T cell tolerance, characterization of specific B lymphocyte genes, kinetics of immune clearance, genetic mechanisms of autoimmunity, vascular abnormalities in the rheumatoid pannus, mechanisms of boney ankylosis, and genetic profiling of Sjogren's Syndrome patients. Clinical projects currently include: trial of a graded exercise program in rheumatoid arthritis, studies of immune clearance abnormalities in various rheumatic diseases and clinical trials of several new drugs and the study of opioid use and dependence in patients with musculoskeletal disease.
