Gary Bryant, M.D.

Division of Rheumatic and Autoimmune Diseases

Dr. Gary L. Bryant is an Associate Professor of Medicine, and serves as the Associate Division Director for Clinical Affairs.  In addition, he is Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School.  He is a graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, and completed his training in Internal Medicine at Stanford University Medical Center.  He did fellowship training in Rheumatology at the Brigham and Women’s and Beth Israel Hospitals affiliated with Harvard Medical School in Boston.

 Dr. Bryant was a staff Rheumatologist at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin prior to joining the University of Minnesota.  In addition to caring for patients and participating in the teaching of residents and medical students, he was a clinical investigator involved in phase III trials of new therapies for inflammatory arthritis.  He served as Medical Director of the Medical Microbiology Laboratory of the Gundersen Medical Foundation, helping to investigate mechanisms of disease and prevention of Lyme Disease.  For the past 12 years he served as Medical Director of the Gundersen Lutheran Health Plan, a physician owned not for profit health plan,  and was most recently acting Chief Executive Officer. He also served as Medical Director of Managed Care for Gundersen Lutheran, overseeing the delegated medical management and processes of care for the practice’s third party insurance relationships.

 Dr. Bryant is currently collaborating with the Department of Orthopedic Surgery to develop a multi-disciplinary University of Minnesota Center for Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Disease.  He is also collaborating with colleagues in the Department of Medicine and the University of Minnesota Physicians to improve access, efficiency, and patient and physician satisfaction in the Ambulatory Clinics at the University of Minnesota Medical Center.
