Physics Residency Description


A position is available beginning July 1, 2009, for residency training in radiation oncology physics at the University of Minnesota, Department of Therapeutic Radiology-Radiation Oncology. The residency training program is conducted in accordance with the AAPM Guidelines and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs, Inc. (CAMPEP).

The intent of the program is to provide hands-on clinical training and to prepare the graduate for the board certification examination and a professional career in radiation therapy. Extensive training is provided in the area of patient setup and positioning, treatment planning and planning computers, clinical dosimetry, brachytherapy, linac calibration and quality assurance, and radiation safety. Experience is offered in the special procedures of stereotactic radiosurgery (GammaKnife), intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), and low dose and high dose rate brachytherapy.

The applicant must have a Ph.D. degree in physics or medical physics or a closely related field. The program duration is 2 years for a graduate of an accredited medical physics program or closely related field. Applications materials should be received before the December 31, 2008, deadline. Decisions for filling the position will be completed by April 15, 2009. It is hoped that the successful applicant will start July 1, 2009. The position is contingent on the applicant's legal eligibility to work in the United States.
