Information for Medical Students

Welcome to Urology 7200!

You may register a 2 or 4 week block. Although students have the choice of doing Adult or Pediatric Urology, only students who plan a career in urology, pediatrics or family practice should elect to take Pediatric Urology.

If you request pediatric urology, you will spend time at UMMC with Dr. Shukla and Dr. Lewis, and at St. Paul and Minneapolis Children’s Hospital with Dr. Wipf. This is a very popular rotation, and Drs. Shukla, Lewis and Wipf only accept one student per rotation. Contact Chrissy Hill at (612)625-8364 for requests and any questions regarding the pediatric rotation.

If you elect to do Adult Urology, you will spend two weeks at one of the following hospitals:

-  Fairview-University Medical Center
-  VA Medical Center
-  Hennepin County Medical Center

If you are taking the entire four weeks in Urology, you should elect two of the three sites listed above.

Urology 7200 Expectations:

1. Assigned Reading
2. Video Lectures
3. Evaluations and Exam

1. Assigned Reading

Medical students taking Urology 7200 will be expected to read assigned chapters from Smiths General Urology (16th or 17th Edition) by Tanagho and McAninch.  A copy of Smith’s General Urology may be loaned to you only with the understanding that it will be returned at the final examination.  Please see Chrissy Hill in A590-2 Mayo if you would like a copy of the book.  If it is not returned, you will not be allowed to sit for the exam.  This book can also be purchased from the Biomedical Bookstore.  Chapters to be read are the following:

Chapter 3: Symptoms of Disorders of the Genitourinary Tract
Chapter 4: Physical Examinations of the Genitourinary Tract
Chapter 5: Urologic Laboratory Examination
Chapter 17: Injuries to the Genitourinary Tract
Chapter 22: Neoplasms of the Prostate Gland
Chapter 28 (16th edition)/29(17th edition): Urinary Incontinence
Chapter 37 (16th edition)/38(17th edition): Male Sexual Dysfunction

2. Video Lectures

You will be provided a disc containing videotaped lectures. Lectures can also be viewed online on the moodle course website. This information is important for the primary care management of urologic problems. These lectures must be viewed prior to the exam. Please see Chrissy in A590-2 Mayo for CD.

3. Evaluations and Exam

It is your responsibility to obtain a final evaluation from the faculty at your rotation site. The evaluation form will be completed online. You should select one faculty member who is aware of your performance to complete the evaluation form. You will complete an evaluation of the hospital rotation(s) online as well.

The exam consists of 32 questions and should take 45 minutes. You must pass the final examination to pass the course. The exam is given on the last Tuesday of the rotation for Pediatric Urology and on the last Thursday of the rotation for Adult Urology. You will need to turn in the Smith General Urology book before taking the examination. If a faculty member is not available to complete the evaluation, please make arrangements with your site coordinator to sit for the exam.

Thank you and enjoy your rotation!
