Specialty Faculty Visits (SFV)

Purposes

  • Learning experiences in the specialties of family medicine, internal medicine, women’s health, pediatrics, and surgery for RPAP students through formal write-ups, presentations, and discussion of patient cases
  • Time for interaction and continuity between University medical students and medical school faculty
  • Continuing medical educational opportunities for preceptor physicians and other community physicians and health professionals in rural Minnesota
  • Connection between the University medical faculty and the RPAP preceptors
  • Develop and maintain a local support network of fellow students within the program

Goals

  • To broaden the basic science and clinical knowledge of students in the specialties and support their education in the community
  • To give students practice organizing/writing case work-ups and formally presenting cases, including findings and differential diagnoses
  • To give students and site preceptors further skills in the daily use of evidence-based medicine

Objectives

All students are responsible for:

  1. Writing an organized, complete history and physical in acceptable format (refer to the provided sample H and P). Include all pertinent data at appropriate level of detail. Include problem list and therapeutic plan with a brief discussion of differential diagnosis and treatment options.
  2. Presenting a clear, concise oral case history. Include all pertinent data at appropriate level of detail organized chronologically. Include assessment and therapeutic plan. Use written history and physical only as guide (don’t just read verbatim).
  3. Demonstrating knowledge of appropriate and complete differential diagnosis and discuss appropriate diagnostic tests to confirm.
  4. Understanding rationale for and formulate a therapeutic plan including pros and cons. Demonstrate knowledge of pharmacology.
  5. Demonstrating effective use of clinical data. Bring appropriate clinical sources of data (i.e., test results, x-rays) to presentation. Interpret tests results appropriately. Know the costs associated with diagnostic and therapeutic options.
  6. Demonstrating effective use of academic resources. Include recent literature review on relevant topic. Discuss knowledge gained from major texts and/or gained from consultants.
  7. Actively participating in all case discussions and learning sessions.
