Pre-Premed: Pipeline Efforts Steer Elementary School Students into Medicine

Elementary school aged kids are being encouraged to pursue a career in medicine more than ever. Medical schools are hoping the early interest could help medically underserved communities in the future. “We so desperately need our Native kids to graduate,” said Anna Wirta-Kosobuski, PhD, University of Minnesota Medical School, Duluth campus. “We need our kids to be able to [pursue health careers to] take care of our own people, and that’s just not happening enough.”
