Dr. Jay Allen is a full-spectrum family medicine physician who supervises obstetrical, inpatient, and outpatient resident encounters. He has a split position with his own clinic and the Duluth Family Medicine Residency Program.

Bio
Dr. Braaten, MD, is faculty at the University of Minnesota Duluth Family Medicine Residency. She grew up on the South Side of Chicago and attended Northwestern University Medical School. She completed her residency at the West Suburban Family Practice Residency, serving the West Side of Chicago. Dr.Braaten first practiced at Family Practice Community Wellness Center, serving an inner-city Latino population. She completed a faculty development fellowship at Cook County Hospital and taught with the St. Elizabeth Family Practice Residency. After 6 years she and her family moved to Northern Minnesota where she joined a rural practice in Deer River, working part-time.
After working in Deer River for ten years, Braaten joined the Duluth Family Medicine Residency Program as faculty in 2013 and she continues to do some rural ER work. In her free time, she enjoys time with her husband and four children.
Dr. Braaten enjoys the breadth of Family Medicine from birth to death, including part-time clinical work in a rural emergency department. She coordinates the community involvement including a weekly clinic at the CHUM homeless shelter and the residency's JEDI Committee. She also coordinates Duluth family medicine residency's multi-disciplinary Medication Safety Conference and serve on the Essentia-wide Peer Review Committee.

Bio
Dr. Gerber joined the Duluth Family Medicine Residency as Program Director in March 2024 after being a community preceptor at DFMC for the last 5 years. She originally trained in Family Medicine in South Africa and in the Southwest of England where she undertook additional Family Practice training and MRCGP membership. Dr. Gerber worked in a rural community providing full scope family medicine with house calls, ED and Urgent Care. On returning home to Duluth MN, she completed residency at DFMRP. She is passionate about preparing residents to practice full scope family medicine in rural communities and dedicated to educating residents to be able to provide excellent care wherever they may end up practicing.
Clinical Summary
Since graduation from residency at DFMRP in 2019, Dr. Gerber has worked as a Hospitalist at Essentia Health Duluth for 5 years. She was Associate Section Chair for the Hospitalist Department.

Dr. Giammar joined the Duluth Family Medicine Residency program in April of 2019. Prior to joining Duluth, she had been practicing full scope family medicine in Superior, Wisconsin. She completed her residency at the University of Minnesota North Memorial program in 2005. She practiced full scope family medicine in Apple Valley, Minnesota, until 2009, when she joined as faculty at North Memorial. She remained core faculty at North Memorial’s residency program until 2015, when her family relocated to the Twin Ports.

Dr. Jones is the Associate Program Director and Core Faculty at the Duluth Family Medicine Residency Program. She also functions as a child abuse examiner for the region as the Medical Director at First Witness Child Advocacy Center.

Dr. Schilling is a Psychologist and Behavioral Health faculty. Her teaching interests include integrated behavioral health, child development, relational/family dynamics patterns, wellness in residency. Her clinical interests include therapy across the lifespan, with specialty in child/family psychology, trauma-informed interventions, and assessment and intervention with developmental disorders (ASD, FASD).
Research Summary
Current areas: evidence-based wellness programming in residency and early identification/remediation of struggles in residency. Historical focus: meta-analysis in child/adolescent mental health preventative interventions.

Bio
Dr. Wood joined the Duluth Family Medicine Residency in 2012, after a 20+ year career in rural family medicine. Since joining the residency, he has been in a variety of roles, from core faculty, to APD, to PD and now back to core faculty. His medical interests include POCUS and inpatient medicine.

Bio
Dr. Yapel is a pharmacist and adjunct faculty member. Her teaching interests include clinical management / guideline review of common chronic disease states such at diabetes and hypertension. Clinical interests include diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and support of patients engaging in opioid tapering.
Research Summary
Understanding the impact of collaborative care of patients between primary and behavioral health systems. Teaching pharmacy students concepts of social determinants of health through case-based learning and implementation of pharmacogenomic monitoring in a primary care clinic system.
