Orientation

Orientation Requirements (see also: Orientation Policy)

All incoming residents and fellows, in both ACGME-accredited and non-accredited programs, who are starting in a new residency or fellowship program at the University of Minnesota are required to attend one of our GME Orientation sessions. This requirement includes those trainees moving from one UMN program to another.

Central GME orientation is held in mid-June and early July to accommodate the vast majority of our incoming residents and fellows who start on cycle with the start of the academic year.  Additional abbreviated sessions are held in mid-July and early August for those trainees who begin in their program after the main orientation dates.

As you enter a new UMN GME residency or fellowship program, you are expected to:

  1. Complete all requirements issued through your onboarding checklist in RMS (log into RMS using the username and password information you received via email from gme@umn.edu),
  2. Attend an in-person central orientation session (you will receive an email invitation with details about your scheduled session),
  3. Be fitted for a respirator (refer to the Occupational Health, Safety, & Immunization Requirements page for details about respirator fit testing and medical clearance), and
  4. Review all orientation resources listed below on this page ("Orientation resources for review").

IMG orientation session

Each year, the UMN GME office hosts an orientation session exclusively for International Medical Graduates, to welcome them to the Twin Cities and help ease their transition to the US medical system.  The session typically lasts for 90 minutes, with dinner served beforehand.  A brief introduction to American GME training is followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with IMG residents/fellows and faculty members.

Attendance is required for incoming IMGs who do not meet one of the exemption requirements; see IMG Orientation attendance requirements.  Trainees scheduled to attend this orientation will receive an email with additional details in late May.

ECFMG certificate

  • All IMGs must have their "valid indefinitely" ECFMG Certificate on file with MMCGME Services.  You will be prompted to submit this via your RMS Onboarding checklist.
  • Timeframe for completion: By the end of first month of training (mandatory).
  • Questions?  Contact rmshelp@umn.edu.

IMG resource information

  • Review the IMG Survival Guide for important IMG information.
  • Review the IMG Resource Information Google Drive folder for resources to help you become familiar with the US Medical System and the University of Minnesota.
  • Timeframe for review: Prior to arrival at U of M (information only).  These resources are purely information and for your benefit; no follow-up action needed.
