Dr. Khoruts has trained at the University of Minnesota. In addition to completing his fellowship in gastroenterology, he also trained in basic immunology as a Howard Hughes Physician Fellow under the mentorship of Dr. Marc Jenkins in the Department of Microbiology. He continued his early research focus on basic biology of T cells and autoimmunity, but subsequently has redirected his efforts into areas ofmicrobiota therapeutics.
Research Summary
As a physician-scientist I am most interested in translating basic scientific discoveries and ideas into clinical applications. My main focus since mid-2000s has been on development of treatments to repair antibiotic injury to intestinal microbial communities, also known as the ‘microbiota’. The most well recognized complication of treatment with antibiotics is Clostridioides difficile infection. However, the standard treatment for this infection is more antibiotics. In fact, the treatment doesn’t work in many patients and the infection keeps coming back.
Our program has developed therapeutic preparations of donor microbiota to treat patients with difficult C. difficile infections; these are commonly known as Fecal Microbiota Transplants (FMT), although we prefer the term Intestinal Microbiota Transplants (IMT). We manufacture IMT preparations as frozen liquid or encapsulated freeze-dried microbiota. The latter can be taken by mouth.
Microbiota therapeutics are classified as drugs by the FDA. However, they are clearly different from small molecule drugs and biologics. In fact, these therapeutics belong to an entirely novel class of drugs, which requires building a new pharmacologic discipline. I am intensely interested in all aspects of microbiota therapeutics pharmacology, including formulation, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics.
There are many potential clinical applications of microbiota therapeutics. Our program is committed to support academic trials for a variety of applications. Some of the ongoing work is in the areas of ulcerative colitis, autism, advanced liver disease, and others. Microbiome research is applicable to many areas of medicine and we are happy to collaborate with clinical investigators.
The success of our program is built on team science. Microbiome research is complex, and our team includes expertise in computational biology, microbiology, pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, and others. A more complete description of the program can be found here.

She is on the Board of Scientific Advisors to the NIEHS. Dr. Lange is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal of Endocrinology (The Endocrine Society - Oxford Academic Journals)
Research Summary
The Lange Lab is focused on the role of steroid hormone receptors (SRs) in breast and ovarian cancers. Estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptors (PRs) are ligand-activated and context-dependent transcription factors that are essential for development of the breast and reproductive tract. Altered sex hormone levels contribute to cancer risk in these tissues and drive metabolic and cell fate transitions associated with rapid tumor progression. The presence of abnormally activated ERs and imbalanced/activated PR and GR isoforms in hormone-driven tumors can dramatically influence response to endocrine or other therapies. Our overarching research goal is to better understand how SR+ breast cancers and other hormone-influenced cancers of reproductive tissues escape endocrine (i.e. SR-blocking) or other molecular targeted therapies that primarily target signaling pathways that are active in proliferating cancer cells.Ongoing projects encompass the following research themes and their molecular mechanisms:• ER and PR isoform signaling cross talk in luminal breast cancer progression• Ligand-independent actions of p-SRs and p-SR-containing complexes in breast cancer• Altered SR actions in the context of ESR1 mutations or BRCA1/2 loss or mutation• Cellular "stress" sensing by phospho-GR in triple negative breast cancer progression• Fallopian tube transformation and early SR+ serous ovarian cancer progression• Cell fate plasticity (cell cycle exit/entry into G0) and breast cancer stem cell biology• Mechanisms of and biological role of cancer cell dormancy/quiescence and senescence• SR and signaling pathway regulation of breast cancer stem cell populations and biology• Breast cancer metastatic cell dissemination as circulating tumor cell/stem cell clusters.

Summary
Dr. Lee finished her Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency at the University of Minnesota and is excited to serve as one of the global health chief residents this year, 2021-2022. She became interested in health inequities and the intersections between health, education, and policy after opportunities to volunteer at Chicago public schools during college which led to a year of AmeriCorps service in Houston, TX. This led to her MPH training which helped her develop skills and interest in epidemiology and public health data analysis. During residency, the global health community at the University of Minnesota brought many opportunities to learn more about global health and working with refugee populations present in the Twin Cities. She has worked on projects investigating how to further improve healthcare that we provide for Limited English Proficiency patients, specifically in regards to working with interpreters.

I have a broad background in physiology, with specific training and expertise in research areas such as ion channel mechanisms, patch clamp electrophysiology, Mg homeostasis, mitochondria, and ER stress. I have carried out electrophysiological experiments to study nicotinic acetylcholine receptors at neuromuscular junctions, voltage-gated cardiac sodium channel and other cardiac ion channels. I have been working on different cardiac disease mouse models (hypertension, MI, HFpEF) and cell models (acutely isolated/cultured cardiomyocytes and human iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes). Recently, I am focusing on studying Mg deficiency-induced cardiac diastolic dysfunction (DD) and Mg supplementation on improvement of DD and HFpEF.
