5-2-1-0 Childhood Obesity Study

The 5-2-1-0 study is an obesity prevention grant from the Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) to address childhood obesity at a population level. It is being carried out at the University of Minnesota Physicians Broadway Family Medicine Clinic.

Study Details

5-2-1-0 messages are the evidence-based recommendations for preventing childhood obesity:

  • 5 or more fruits and vegetables per day
  • 2 or less hours of screen time per day
  • 1 or more hours of physical activity per day
  • 0 sugar-sweetened beverages per day

Behavioral health providers see parents and children before the medical provider in well-child visits and use motivational interviewing methods to discuss the 5-2-1-0 recommendations with the parent and child. The parent and child also set a goal related to the 5-2-1-0 messages with the behavioral health provider, who then follows up if desired by the parent.
