Financial Support

Funding and financial aid for MSTP students

All students accepted to the University of Minnesota’s Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD) are offered fully-funded positions including a stipend, tuition, required fees and health insurance*, which are provided by the supporting fellowship. The funding is provided for the duration of the training period, contingent upon satisfactory progress in the Program. Many of the students are funded by the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) grant from the National Institutes of Health. Other sources of institutional support are utilized to support students not appointed to the MSTP grant. Funding support from the MD/PhD Program is provided during the years students are enrolled in Medical School; support during the PhD phase of training is the responsibility of each student’s thesis advisor. The specific source of funding for each trainee while in Medical School is determined by the Director of the MD/PhD Program.

*The University requires that students receiving health insurance on the Graduate Assistant Plan pay 5% of the premium cost of this insurance. As per University policy, this cost is not refundable to the student by any department or program.
