The Interview Process

Number of applicant interviews

We interview approximately 55 students each admissions cycle.

Interview day scheduling

We have 6 interview days, beginning in October and ending in February. If you are invited for an interview, we will suggest two potential dates(availability permitting) for you to interview with our program. It is generally difficult to schedule an interview outside of our regularly scheduled interview days.

Interview day: What to expect

Prior to the interview, we will contact you to learn more about your specific research interests and faculty you would like to meet. During your interview, you will have one-on-one meetings (30 minutes each) with some of these faculty members, several members of our Steering Committee, and one member of our Students Admissions Committee. You will also have a one-on-one meeting with the Director. There will be an introductory information session, a student-led session about our program, a campus tour, and numerous social opportunities for you to interact with our current students.

After the interview

Your application will be reviewed and discussed by the MSTP Steering Committee. We receive evaluation comments from all of the individuals who met with you one-on-one during your visit. The committee will decide to either

  1. extend an offer of admission;
  2. not extend an offer of admission; or
  3. place you on our waitlist.

We utilize a rolling admissions process, so the committee decision will be communicated to you as soon as possible following the interview. Additional information on our evaluation process is available here.
