Speaker - Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN)

Senator Klobuchar is the first woman elected to represent the State of Minnesota in the United States Senate and assumed office in 2007. Senator Klobuchar grew up in Minnesota and was the valedictorian of her Wayzata High School class. She graduated magna cum laude from Yale University and the University of Chicago Law School. Before serving in the Senate, Senator Klobuchar headed the largest prosecutor’s office in Minnesota for eight years.

As a U.S. Senator, she currently serves on several committees: 

  • Committee on the Judiciary

  • Joint Economic Committee

  • Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation

  • Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation

  • Committee on Rules and Administration  (Ranking Member)


Prior to Ceremony

Submit your Application for Degree - Deadline: March 31, 2018

  1. Log into MyU
  2. Click on Key Links > Student Center
  3. Click on the drop-down arrow under Academics, and select “Apply for Graduation”, then click the circle to the right to move forward.
  4. Click on “Apply for Graduation”
  5. Select a graduation term and hit “Continue”. Fall (December), Spring (May), or Summer (August). If you plan on graduating at the end of June or July, please contact Jennifer Neufeld at
  6. Review your information before clicking on “Submit Application”.

Order Cap/Gown - Deadline: March 29, 11:59pm

Students order academic apparel (cap, gown, tassel, and hood) through the Herff Jones website.

Submit Name Pronunciation - Deadline: April 1, 2018
An email was sent to you on February 7th with instructions. Please refer to that email and follow the instructions.

Submit your nominations for greeters - Deadline: February 21, 2018

Each year the graduating class nominates two faculty or staff members to be greeters on stage during the commencement ceremony. Greeters will stand on stage to congratulate you as you receive your hod and walk across the stage. Being selected as a greeter is an honor and considered recognition by those selected of their efforts in helping and guding you through your medical school career. 

1. Go to MedIS and select the voting module on your landing page or on the side menu

2. You will be presented with the nomination link

3. Enter up to three (3) nominations. Nominations are anonymous.

Pick up your cap/gown
Must pick up on Wednesday, May 2nd between 10am and 2pm in Mayo B620. If you're unable to pick it up at this time, a classmate can pick it up for you, but be aware that you will miss the professional posed photo in your cap and gown.

Regalia returns:

All regalia must be returned to the Hubbard Broadcasting Rehearsal Studio (Northrop Room #040) after the ceremony!

After Ceremony

Purchase your photos from LifeTouch and send link to family/friends.  TBA

Send Commencement video to family/friends who were unable to make it

Watch for your diploma in the mail
Diplomas will be mailed to the diploma address you entered in your application for degree eight to ten weeks after the ceremony by the OneStop. Dimensions are 11”x14” and frames can be purchased from Herff Jones or the U of M Bookstore.

Important Notes:

Commencement attendance does not imply that you have officially graduated
Degree conferral is contingent upon satisfactory completion of college and University of Minnesota requirements, including payment of all assessed University fees, fines, and bills. Please contact the registrar, Jennifer Neufeld, at, with any questions you have and/or to confirm your degree clearance status.

Residency Certification
Most residency programs require certification of your graduation from Medical School. However, we cannot certify your degree until ALL graduation requirements have been met -- successful completion of USMLE Steps 1 and 2CK and CS, successful completion of all coursework, and all grades posted. In lieu of the official certification of degree, we can provide a letter stating your expected graduation date. Contact Cynthia Johnson at with your requests.

Tickets are not required for the ceremony; seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. 

There are a number of parking options near Northrop Auditorium. Note that the ramps may have event parking in effect, which require cash/check upon entry. Visit Northrop’s website here  for more information and maps to parking facilities.
